A Simple Guide in 3 Key Steps
Tooth avulsion—when a tooth is completely knocked out—is a true dental emergency. The way the tooth is handled in the first few minutes can significantly affect whether it can be saved. Here is a clear, practical guide to managing tooth avulsion in three essential steps.
Step 1: Handle the Tooth Correctly
If the tooth is found, pick it up by the crown only (the visible white part). Avoid touching the root, as this can damage the delicate cells needed for successful re-implantation. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline. Do not scrub, scrape, or disinfect the tooth.
Step 2: Reinsert or Store the Tooth Properly
If possible, gently place the tooth back into its socket immediately. If re-insertion is not feasible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in cold milk, saline, or the patient’s saliva. The tooth should never be allowed to dry, as dryness greatly reduces the chance of successful healing.
Step 3: Seek Immediate Dental Care
Time is critical in cases of tooth avulsion. The patient should see a dentist as soon as possible, ideally within 30 to 60 minutes. Prompt professional care gives the best chance of saving the tooth and restoring function.
In summary: quick action, correct handling, and immediate dental attention can make all the difference in saving an avulsed tooth.
